The world's only fairly traded olive oil is produced in the troubled region of the West Bank, Palestine. Olives are economically and socially vital. They make up the cultural backbone of a country that is torn apart politically.

Palestine is the historical home of the olive tree and has produced oil for thousands of years. Yet for the last forty years the Israeli occupation and illegal settlements have severely hampered production and distribution. Forty five per cent of agricultural land is still covered in groves - but restrictions on farmers' movements, the separation wall (making some trees inaccessible), the uprooting of trees and attacks by settlers mean that oil often remains unsold.

Now Palestinian olive farmers have an opportunity to do business on fairer terms. Today, these producers sell their olive oil directly to the Netherlands, France and the UK, getting a good price for their product. They look to the future with hope.
